More phone !joy

I switched to the Samsung device because it has better reception at home. Mind you, I kinda hate this thing. But it picked up a new trick when I upgraded it which may be the final nail…

LineageOS thinks they have finally figured out how to upgrade the A5 from version 14.1 (Android 7.1) to 16.0, (Android 9.0). How do I know this? Because I upgraded to the last version of LineageOS 14.1 for this device, and now it alerts me every day of the nightly build for 16.0, but informs me the upgrade tool cannot do major version upgrades.

Instead I need to follow an adb sideload upgrade which, alas, fails, telling me the device is not reporting itself as an a5y17lte,  but as a . Yes, exactly, it apparently is not reporting itself as anything, so getting this to install is going to be a challenge.

In the meantime, that last upgrade for 14.1? It did something sooo interesting – it managed to kill the loudspeaker. The loudspeaker is the speaker used for notifications, ringing, and speakerphone. This means the phone currently is always in silent mode. And during a call, if I turn on speaker phone I get an ear-splitting blast of what sounds like digital communications, not the sound of the conversation.

Yay technology.

Probably a month until shipping of my Librem 5. Maybe I can live with a silent mode phone that long.

Maybe my partner can pick up a FairPhone for me next trip to the EU… they just announced a preorder!
