We needed housing for the family during Elizabeth graduate studies. We found a place on the Kitsap Peninsula, not too far from a ferry landing, which we could afford. It was an oddly-built house, and small, and had the nickname in the neighbourhood as the “Candy-cane House” for its fence, which had been red-and-white but thankfully had been painted a dull beige by the time we arrived.

The house is gone now, replaced by McMansions with far less character (but, probably, more comfortable.)
